Small Business Tips We Embrace
Last Fall, we were fortunate to have Dave Ramsey's 1-Day Entreleadership course come to Kansas City. It was incredibly inspiring and gave us so much to think about and incorporate into our business model.
Here are some simple tips we think have helped us!
Owning your own business can be stressful. But for us, if we fail or the business just isn't working, we have no debt. We close our doors and sell what we own. For us, that is very freeing! We don't expect that to happen. But without debt we are free to enjoy growing the business and being able to manage the growth at our own pace.

How Tall Are You?
Just like every family, we have a lot of funny stories. They get repeated over and over again. We find them equally funny every time they are told. Maybe not everyone finds them as funny as we do and maybe the family member they are about don't find them near as funny as the rest of us. So that's why I'm not really writing about one of our funny moments. But laughter is good for every soul. And laughing at yourself is a great skill to have and one I've had to learn!
Eric and I are both tall. All of my life people have made comments about my height. "Wow you're tall.... how's the air up there... do you play basketball?" You know..all the old ones...nothing ever original. I am 6' tall. Eric is 6'1". We managed to produce five sons who are very tall... 6'8", 6'1", 6'5", 6'5", 6'5".... I am now the shortest in the family. But, as they grew, we joked with them about marrying short to even out the gene pool.
Brenden and Sarah started dating in high school. It is told the first time he brought her home to watch a movie they arrived to find no furniture in the house. I was tired of the boys stuffing wrappers down the couches and leaving dishes in the living room. The furniture was on it's last leg. I had a day off. I drug the couch to the burn pile. Imagine their surprise when they arrived home to just a TV! I don't really remember that part. I do remember burning the couch. It was very healing! We laugh about it now and I'm thankful Sarah still decided to join our crazy tall family! Anyway...Sarah is short.... She often asks to be remeasured on the wall to see if she's grown just a bit more!
Sarah knows she is short just like we know we are tall! Becca recently shared the above photo on Facebook. It cracks me up!
Becca is Brady's wife. She's tall! I'm not going to lie... we were surprised he found someone who is 6'3". And their kids are tall! How weird would it be if they had short kids? Wouldn't you all be thinking hard on that?
Well, I did play basketball. And so did Brady. But I'm here to tell you not all tall people play ball...shocking, right? lol ...... But being tall does come with some perils... Brady has to watch door frames...particularly in our office! I actually gave myself a concussion on the corner of our garage roof a few years back. But we can reach things! If you ever see Brady or any of the guys with a cut on their head they probably hit something... Oh, wait....most of you can't see the tops of their heads because they are so tall!
Often times people call the office and say...."Oh, I talked to that really tall guy...". Well, there are five of them.... I think Brenden doesn't think he's that tall at 6'1" but he really is, too. I swear as a tall woman...I'm sure Becca has experienced this...and even the guys...people look down to see if we're wearing heels! Well, the guys do wear boots that probably give them a couple more inches of height.
We don't look tall in pictures until we start adding in other people...and door frames for reference.
Funny enough all of our sons and daughter-in-laws to date are very musical and that has nothing to do with their height....and Sarah is an amazing dancer. They are passing all these things on to our grand kids..... and you might occasionally hear the guys singing on a job site..... something about diggy diggy hole..... No seriously, if you ever get the chance to hear the boys do anything musical....they can digs holes, build walls, and make beautiful music.
It's our life and we're fine with being tall.
Well, maybe this isn't really a funny story but it's a little more about us.... this video of Matthias singing to his sister is really funny to us....wait until the end when he hits that high note!
